The quant section of a placement test is not a mathematics exam. It is an arithmetic speed test built on school-level topics, and the syllabus is far narrower than the size of most aptitude books suggests.

The order to learn them in

Sequence matters, because the early topics are inputs to the later ones. Learning probability before you are fast at percentages is wasted effort.

  1. Number system fundamentals — divisibility rules, factors, LCM and HCF, remainders. Two or three days, and it makes everything after it faster.
  2. Percentages — until fraction-percentage conversions are automatic. This is the single highest-return topic in the syllabus.
  3. Ratio, proportion, averages, mixtures — one cluster, learned together.
  4. Profit-loss-discount and interest — direct applications of the previous two, so they go quickly.
  5. Time and work, then time-speed-distance — the two big word-problem families.
  6. Data interpretation — start it once your arithmetic is fast, not before.
  7. Permutation, combination, probability — last, and expect it to take longer per mark than anything else.

The arithmetic you should not be calculating

Test speed comes mostly from recall, not from method. These are worth memorising outright:

Memorise cold

  • Squares up to 30 and cubes up to 15
  • Fraction-to-percentage conversions for 1/2 through 1/16
  • Multiplication tables to 20
  • Common percentage equivalents: 12.5% = 1/8, 16.66% = 1/6, 33.33% = 1/3, 6.25% = 1/16
  • Powers of 2 up to 2^12

Why this matters more than it sounds

In a test averaging 60 seconds per question, converting 37.5% to 3/8 instantly rather than working it out is the difference between finishing the section and leaving six questions blank.

How companies differ

  • Mass recruiters (service-based IT) — wide but shallow; speed matters more than difficulty. Sectional cutoffs and sometimes negative marking.
  • Product companies — fewer quant questions, harder ones, often mixed into a broader test with logic and coding.
  • Banking and finance roles — heavy on data interpretation and interest-based arithmetic.
  • Consulting and analytics — case-flavoured quant and estimation, closer to CAT-style questions than to school arithmetic.

Whatever the timeframe, keep an error log: every wrong answer, why it was wrong (concept, calculation, or misread), reviewed weekly. Most students plateau because they practise volume without ever diagnosing their own failure pattern.

How much time should I give to quantitative aptitude daily?

Forty-five minutes to an hour of focused, timed practice beats three unfocused hours. Consistency over eight weeks matters far more than intensity over one.

Do I need to study for CAT-level quant for placements?

No, for most campus drives. Placement quant is faster and easier than CAT quant. The exception is consulting, analytics and some finance roles, where the difficulty is closer.

Is a calculator allowed in placement aptitude tests?

Usually not, and this is exactly why mental arithmetic and memorised conversions matter so much. Assume no calculator unless told otherwise.

What if I am from a non-mathematics background?

Nothing in the syllabus goes beyond Class 10 mathematics. The gap is practice and speed, not ability — start with the number system and percentages and give it four weeks before judging yourself.
